What
Five burglars searched the Watergate building which housed the Democratic National Committee in 1972. These burglars were connected to Richard Nixon which eventually gave the impression that he planned the Watergate infiltration. It was suspicious especially when Nixon attempted to cover up the crime when he became a suspect. The burglars attempted to bug the telephones and ceilings of the office as well as stealing copies of top secret documents belonging to the Democratic National Committee. All this pointed to Nixon, as he wanted to know what he was up against during the election.
Where
The burglary took place in the Watergate building. The Watergate building contained the offices of the Democratic National Committee, Richard Nixon's opposition. The building was located in Washington D.C. during the 70's, it has been recently renovated into a hotel.
When
On June 17, 1972, the incident involving Watergate took place. It was quite early, meaning there were no people working in the offices. Although the burglary was planned months in advance and the time was before the employees arrived for work, the burglars were caught by a security guard.
Why
It appeared the motives of the burglars were to wiretap the phones in order listen to what the plans and secrets the Democratic party had concerning the election. They also attempted to steal files from the offices with the same motive, and although the evidence pointed to Nixon, he denied to be affiliated with the scandal at Watergate. Nixon made the situation worse by created paranoia among Americans concerning his refusal to give any evidence to the Supreme Court.
Results of the Scandal
The overall result and consequences of the Watergate scandal was the impeachment of president Richard Nixon as a result of being untrustworthy and created fear among the American public. Before his official impeachment, Nixon resigned from office and was the first president in American history to undergo the impeachment process.
